After a week-long unplanned hiatus, both tournaments, the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL), are set to resume action on May 17. The remaining eight PSL games, including four group stage matches and four playoffs, will be played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
Lahore will exclusively host the playoff games, which means all of the remaining group stage matches are locked in for Rawalpindi. The revised schedule for the league includes one double-header on Sunday (May 18). Multan Sultans (MS) will face Quetta Gladiators (QG) in the day fixture, while Peshawar Zalmi (PZ) and Karachi Kings (KK) will clash at the same venue in the evening game. All of the remaining games will also be played under lights.
“HBL PSL X picks up from where it left off,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chair Mohsin Naqvi wrote in a Twitter post. “6 teams, 0 fear. Get ready for 8 thrilling matches starting 17th May, leading up to the Grand Final on 25th May. Best of luck to all the teams!”
The league was postponed for almost a week in the wake of escalated cross-border tensions between Pakistan and India. While the PCB earlier considered relocating the remaining games to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amidst the conflict, it ultimately chose to ‘take a respectful pause’ during the heightened instability within the region.
With the situation seemingly settled now, the league is ready to roll again, but the availability of international players remains a great worry for the franchises, though many teams have expressed confidence about their foreign picks returning. Nevertheless, the PCB has allowed teams to scout new players in a replacement draft.
With eight defeats, Multan Sultans (MS) are currently the only team to have been eliminated, with Peshawar Zalmi teetering on the cusp of disqualification. Quetta Gladiators are almost through to the next stage, while Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, and Lahore Qalandars will need to fight it out to stay in the top four. However, the absence (or presence) of foreign players might change the scenario entirely for the teams still in the playoff contention.
Pakistan are also hosting Bangladesh for a five-match T20I series starting on May 25, the same day of the PSL Final. However, both boards will have to tweak the schedule in order to accommodate the overlap. Currently, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is awaiting clearance from the government to allow the team to travel to Pakistan. Pakistan do not have any international engagement before a red-ball series against West Indies in the end of July.
